Digitalising road safety operations: The FRSC approach

    The ugly narrative of road traffic crashes in the early 1970s and 1980s forced the Federal Government to establish the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in 1988, as the lead agency in road safety administration and traffic management in Nigeria via decree no 45 of 1988 as amended by decree no 35 of 1992, later codified as FRSC Act (CAP 141) Laws of the Federation 1990 and FRSC Act CAP F19, LFN, 2004; FRSC (Establishment) Act, 2007.   But the road safety administration in Nigeria has witnessed a paradigm shift from traditional approach to Safe Systems Approach through the use of state of the art Information Technology facilities, The Corps has been able to enhance its operational capacity aimed at promoting public safety and security. Arising from the report of the ill-fated fatal crash that occured along the Maiduguri-Damaturu route, the Acting Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, Dauda Ali Biu has decried the incessant violation of legal speed limit as such, directed Commanding Officers to step up nationwide special operations to apprehend violators  and impound their vehicles. He stated this following the wanton violation of established traffic rules by motorists which led to the avoidable crash that occured on 22 November, 2022 at 0940HRS, along Maiduguri-Damaturu route by Jakana 45 Benesheik-Maiduguri, Borno State. According to preliminary investigation conducted into the fatal crash, the avoidable menace involved 2 Toyota Busses and a Volkswagen Golf 3 leading to a fire outbreak that burnt most of the victims to death. In all, there where 45 people (26 Male Adults, 13 Female adults, 3 Male children, 3 Female children) involved in the crash, out of which 37 victims comprising of 20 Male adults,
