“Walking in the Right Identity: Rediscovering Who You Are in Christ” BY BRO. TOMILOLA OLOGUNSUA

By Afolabi Olajuwon

On a calm and radiant Sunday morning, worshippers at the Foursquare Gospel Church, Wuse District Headquarters, Abuja, converged with palpable anticipation for a Spirit-filled Youth Sunday Service. The atmosphere was charged with worship, reflection, and youthful vibrancy as voices united in heartfelt praise, preparing the congregation for an enriching encounter with the Word. The service featured Bro. Tomilola Ologunsua, a dynamic youth minister whose message titled “Walking in the Right Identity” resonated with deep biblical truth and contemporary relevance.
Bro. Ologunsua illustrated how divine remembrance transforms hidden faithfulness into public honour. He emphasized that every believer carries a heavenly identity which, when rightly aligned, becomes the key to unlocking divine dignity and long-awaited manifestation.

Understanding Identity in Christ
Bro. Ologunsua began by defining identity as “who you are in Christ”, a reflection of divine character, conduct, and behaviour that mirrors the nature of God. Citing 2 Corinthians 5:16–17, he reminded the congregation that believers are “new creatures” whose old selves have passed away.

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17, KJV)

He stressed that identity in Christ is not shaped by circumstances, background, or human approval, but by God’s declaration. Every Christian, he noted, is an ambassador of Christ, a representative of heaven on earth, called to reflect divine virtues in everyday life.

The Dangers of Losing God’s Identity
Bro. Ologunsua highlighted two major threats to spiritual identity:

Sin: He likened sin to a smudge that distorts the believer’s reflection of Christ. Sin disconnects one from divine purpose and authority, eroding the image of God imprinted at creation.

False Identity: He warned that many Christians adopt false identities shaped by societal pressure, comparison, or past failures. When believers forget who they are in Christ, they drift from divine assignment. “When you lose your identity in Christ,” he declared, “you begin to live beneath your God-given potential.”

Escaping from False Identity
The minister provided a practical guide on reclaiming and maintaining one’s true identity in God through two principal means:

The Word of God: Citing 2 Timothy 3:16, he emphasized that “all Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness.” The Word shapes and renews the believer’s mind, helping them see themselves as God sees them.

The Holy Spirit: Bro. Ologunsua described the Holy Spirit as the “identity confirmer,” guiding believers into all truth and reminding them of their divine heritage.

Supporting scriptures such as Genesis 1:26–28, Daniel 1:20, Matthew 11:11, and John 14:12 were used to underscore the authority, excellence, and supernatural capacity embedded in the believer’s identity.

“Let us make man in our image, after our likeness...” (Genesis 1:26)
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me... greater works than these shall he do.” (John 14:12)

Identity as the Key to Purpose and Destiny:
In a stirring conclusion, Bro. Ologunsua declared that identity is the compass of destiny, without it, one’s purpose remains obscure. He pointed to David as a classic example of one who maintained integrity and godly behaviour even in adversity. David “behaved himself wisely” (1 Samuel 18:14), demonstrating that consistent character sustains divine elevation.
He urged believers to show allegiance to God in all things and to extend a helping hand to others in discovering their identity, according to the biblical injunction in Philippians 2:4:
“Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.”

He concluded that as believers rise in their divine identity, they must become channels through which others find theirs, thus spreading the fragrance of Christ’s honour and dignity in a world longing for authentic representation of God’s glory.

Key Takeaways

True identity is found in Christ alone; anything outside Him is counterfeit.

Sin and false identity rob believers of their divine inheritance and honour.

The Word of God and the Holy Spirit are the twin anchors for restoring true identity

Identity determines destiny, knowing who you are defines where you will go

Helping others find their identity is part of manifesting God’s honour in our generation.

The message by Bro. Tomilola Ologunsua was both revelatory and transformative. It reminded believers that divine honour and dignity are not accidental but are manifestations of walking in the right identity, rooted in Christ and nurtured by the Word and Spirit. Just as Mordecai’s honour manifested in God’s appointed time, so shall every believer who remains steadfast in divine identity experience heaven’s remembrance.
In a world where confusion about worth and purpose abounds, this message stands as a prophetic call for the Church to reclaim its authentic voice. Indeed, “when heaven remembers, honour manifests.”
