Against the backdrop of growing economic pressures, insecurity, social uncertainty, and global instability, worshippers at Foursquare Gospel Church, Wuse District Headquarters, Abuja, were challenged to cultivate resilient faith and embrace biblical principles that enable believers to triumph over life's difficulties.

The charge came during the church's first Sunday service in June 2026, which began with a vibrant and spirit-filled praise and worship session led by the choir. The uplifting ministrations prepared the congregation for a profound encounter with God's Word, setting a reverent atmosphere for spiritual reflection and renewal.

Delivering the sermon titled “The Principles of Being an Overcomer in a Challenging World,” Reverend Babatunde Oresanya drew his message from Romans 1:16–17 and Habakkuk 2:1–5, emphasizing that faith remains the believer's most dependable anchor in turbulent times.

Speaking on the theme, “Living by Faith in a Challenging World,” Rev. Oresanya observed that contemporary society is confronted by numerous challenges, including insecurity, economic hardship, fluctuating exchange rates, kidnappings, killings, and widespread uncertainty. According to him, these realities affect individuals, families, institutions, and nations in profound ways.

Drawing from Matthew 24:3–13, he explained that many of the difficulties confronting the world today were foretold by Jesus Christ. He urged Christians not to be ignorant of unfolding events but to interpret them through the lens of Scripture. Wisdom, he noted, begins with understanding the times while maintaining confidence in God's sovereignty.

The minister defined a principle as a fundamental rule or belief that guides behaviour, decisions, and thinking. An overcomer, he explained, is not a person who avoids challenges but one who confronts adversity and emerges stronger rather than defeated.

Rev. Oresanya outlined six biblical principles for overcoming life's challenges.

The first principle, he said, is being born again. Referencing 1 John 5:4–5, he stressed that spiritual victory begins with a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ. While every overcomer is born again, he remarked, not every born-again Christian necessarily lives as an overcomer. Citing John 10:10, he emphasized that salvation introduces believers to the life and power of God, enabling them to resist the destructive intentions of the enemy. Like a tree deeply rooted by a river, a believer's strength is sustained by spiritual connection to Christ.

The second principle is renewing the mind through God's Word. Drawing from Romans 12:1–2, 1 Corinthians 10:13, and Proverbs 23:7, he explained that victory is often won or lost in the mind. Challenges may remain the same, but a transformed perspective changes how believers respond to them. He encouraged worshippers to develop a biblical worldview, noting that every challenge contains lessons, opportunities, and possibilities for growth. "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he," he reminded the congregation, underscoring the power of mindset in shaping outcomes.

The third principle is consulting God in all decisions. Referring to John 5:19–20, 30 and Acts 16:6, Rev. Oresanya noted that challenges frequently present believers with difficult choices. He explained that seeking divine guidance through prayer and dependence on God prevents costly mistakes and provides clarity. Using biblical examples, he illustrated that God's direction often accelerates progress and leads His people along paths they may not have discovered through human wisdom alone.

The fourth principle is giving thanks always. Drawing lessons from 1 Thessalonians 5:18, Matthew 14:14–19, John 11, and Philippians 4:5–7, he taught that gratitude is a powerful expression of faith. Thanksgiving, he said, enables believers to focus on God's faithfulness rather than their limitations. Just as Jesus gave thanks before the multiplication of loaves and before calling Lazarus from the grave, Christians must cultivate gratitude even before seeing the manifestation of their prayers.

The fifth principle is avoiding complaints and murmuring. Citing 1 Corinthians 10:10, the Rev. Oresanya warned that persistent complaining weakens faith and distracts believers from God's promises. He observed that while challenges are real, wisdom requires focusing on solutions rather than magnifying problems. Complaints may describe circumstances, but faith transforms circumstances.

The sixth principle is engaging in positive confession. Referencing Psalm 141:3, Romans 10:13, Proverbs 21:23, he emphasized the significance of words in shaping attitudes and actions. Believers, he said, must align their speech with God's promises rather than their fears. The tongue, when governed by wisdom, becomes an instrument of encouragement, hope, and spiritual strength.

Throughout the message, Rev. Oresanya emphasized the indispensable role of Bible study in developing spiritual maturity and resilience. He noted that believers who consistently study and meditate on Scripture are better equipped to navigate uncertainty because the Word of God provides wisdom, direction, and courage. Just as a lighthouse guides ships through storms, biblical truth guides believers through life's most turbulent seasons.

He concluded by reassuring the congregation that God desires His people to be overcomers and has provided sufficient spiritual resources through faith, prayer, thanksgiving, obedience, and the study of His Word.

The service later transitioned into Holy Communion and prayers, as worshippers committed themselves anew to living by faith and applying biblical principles for victorious Christian living in an increasingly challenging world.
