Overcoming Fear: Embracing God's Presence and Strength
Rev. Babatunde Idowu
Worshippers at Foursquare Gospel Church, Wuse District Headquarters, Abuja, were on Sunday July 5, 2026 charged to overcome fear by trusting in God's unfailing help and abiding presence.
The service commenced with a vibrant and spirit-filled session of praise and worship led by the church choir. The uplifting ministration created an atmosphere of reverence and spiritual expectancy, preparing congregants for a profound engagement with the Scriptures.
The message, delivered by the Senior Pastor and District Overseer, Rev. Babatunde Idowu, was titled "Overcoming Fear: Embracing God's Presence and Strength." It was anchored on the theme, "Obtaining Unfailing Help from the Unlimited God," with the main text taken from Isaiah 41:10.
Rev. Idowu said the scripture offers a clear divine assurance to believers: "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God." He explained that God's command to His people begins with the instruction to reject fear before embracing His promise of strength, help and preservation.
According to him, fear is a common human experience that appears in different stages of life, including fear of the future, fear of failure, fear of disappointment, fear of the unknown and fear of life after retirement. He noted that while fear may arise naturally, believers must not allow it to control their decisions or weaken their faith.
"Wherever there is fear, there will be doubt, anxiety, panic, loss of peace and nervousness," he said, urging Christians to confront fear with confidence in God's Word.
Drawing from Matthew 14, where Peter began to sink after taking his eyes off Christ and focusing on the storm, Rev. Idowu said fear becomes dangerous when attention shifts from God's promise to surrounding circumstances. He reminded the congregation that Peter cried out to Jesus and was immediately rescued.
He said the account demonstrates that God's hand is never too short to save, adding that no situation is beyond divine reach when believers cry to God in faith.
Rev. Idowu also cited Genesis 3, explaining that fear led Adam and Eve into hiding after they disobeyed God. He described isolation as one of the consequences of fear, warning that fear often pushes people into silence when they should seek God, counsel and support.
Rev. Idowu further referenced 2 Timothy 1:7, stating that God has not given His people the spirit of fear, but of power, love and sound mind. He said believers must reject fear as a controlling force and embrace the peace that comes through faith.
Speaking on the unlimited capacity of God, he cited Jeremiah 32:27, declaring that nothing is too hard for the Lord. He also referred to Colossians 1:16–20, describing God as the Creator and Sustainer of all things, visible and invisible.
He said Christians can trust God's help because He sees, hears and knows their struggles. Referring to Exodus 3:7–8, he noted that God saw the affliction of Israel, heard their cry, knew their sorrow and came down to deliver them.
"God sees what His people are passing through. He hears their cry. He knows their pain, and He has the power to deliver," he said.
Rev. Idowu urged worshippers to remain connected to God's presence, saying divine presence brings divine power. He illustrated this with the account of the Ark of the Covenant in 1 Samuel 5, where the idol of Dagon fell before the Ark, symbolising the superiority of God's presence over every opposing power.
He encouraged the congregation to meditate on Scripture, stand firmly on God's promises and refuse to be ruled by fear.
He concluded by calling on believers to seek grace not to doubt God's Word, promises or instructions, stressing that those who walk with God can face the future with courage.
The service ended with prayers for strength, faith, peace of mind and divine help as worshippers committed themselves to trusting God in the second half of the year.
