Africa has what it takes to develop itself – Tinubu By Adakoriko Adaviriku Adumaza

President Bola Tinubu emphasized Africa's potential for self-development, stressing the need to boost intra-African trade and collaboration. He believes the continent has the necessary resources, people, and capacity to drive its own growth. Tinubu urged Africa to look inward, leveraging its strengths to benefit its people and the continent as a whole. He confidently declared, "The time for Africa is now. We can. We must. We will."

Tinubu's remarks came ahead of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW 2025), where he will join global leaders to accelerate sustainable development and socioeconomic progress. The event aims to explore pathways to a sustainable economy and a new era of prosperity for all.

Intra-African trade is a crucial aspect of the continent's growth, with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) aiming to boost trade and consolidate a market of 1.3 billion people ¹. However, challenges persist, including restrictive visa policies, inadequate border management infrastructure, and limited awareness of the economic benefits of free movement.

To overcome these obstacles, experts recommend easing travel restrictions, harmonizing regulations, and investing in necessary infrastructure ². The Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) is also expected to facilitate cross-border payments and reduce costs associated with currency exchange.
