Blue economy: There must be targets and timelines for coastal states – Expert. By Adakoriko Adaviriku Adumaza
To achieve a blue economy, Nigeria's littoral states must be held accountable for working towards specific targets and milestones with set timelines. The Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy should take the lead in ensuring these states are on track.
Soji Adeleye, CEO of Alfe City Institution, emphasizes that getting coastal states to take action is crucial. He also stresses the need to review and remove laws that hinder littoral states' access to the blue economy, such as those regulating waterways traffic and limiting state high courts' jurisdiction over maritime cases.
Adeleye suggests that setting up a Nigerian Blue Economy Commission would help regulate the ecosystem and provide agencies with clear targets and timelines. He also highlights insecurity as a major obstacle to Nigeria's economic growth, particularly along the coastal lines.
Despite the buzz around the blue economy, Adeleye notes that Nigeria has yet to make significant progress, remaining at the advocacy stage. He urges serious planning, starting with the creation of the Blue Economy Commission, to capitalize on the blue economy as Nigeria's next economic frontier and escape disaster.
