Thugs invade PDP national secretariat, disrupt BoT meeting

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) crisis escalated on Wednesday when suspected thugs stormed the party's national secretariat in Abuja, disrupting the 79th Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting. The chaos erupted due to a leadership dispute between Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Udey-Okoye, who both claim to be the National Secretary.
The conflict began when Udey-Okoye, the party's former National Youth Leader, was forcibly removed from the meeting hall by thugs allegedly loyal to Anyanwu. The thugs claimed Udey-Okoye was not a BoT member, sparking a confrontation between his supporters and Anyanwu's aides.
The situation spiraled out of control, with thugs scaling the fence of the PDP national secretariat to support their respective leaders. Police and security agents intervened, using pepper spray to restore order.
Despite the chaos, the closed-door meeting continued without Udey-Okoye in attendance. The meeting was chaired by acting National Chairman Umar Damagum and BoT Chairman Adolphus Wabara.
The leadership crisis stems from a court dispute over the National Secretary position. A High Court and the Court of Appeal in Enugu removed Anyanwu from office and recognized Udey-Okoye as the National Secretary on December 20, 2024, and January 14, 2025. However, Anyanwu secured a stay of execution order from the Court of Appeal in Abuja.
