Lassa Fever kills doctor, 97 others in Nigeria by Adakoriko Adaviriku Adumaza
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) is sounding the alarm on the urgent need for Nigerians to take preventive measures against Lassa fever. With 98 lives already lost in 2025, including a medical doctor, the agency is emphasizing the importance of maintaining rodent-free environments and enhancing personal hygiene.
The NCDC's Director General, Jide Idris, noted that the case fatality rate has reached an alarming 18.3% as of epidemiological week 9. The 98 deaths were recorded across 14 states, with Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, and Ebonyi states accounting for 91% of confirmed cases.
To contain the outbreak, the NCDC is advising Nigerians to take the following preventive measures:
Proper Waste Disposal: Dispose of waste properly to prevent rodents from accessing it.
Seal Food in Airtight Containers: Store food in airtight containers to prevent rodents from contaminating it.
Block Rodent Entry Points: Seal any holes or gaps in homes and buildings to prevent rodents from entering.
Enhance Personal Hygiene: Practice good hygiene, including regular handwashing and proper cleaning of surfaces.
The NCDC has also intensified contact tracing and monitoring of possible contacts, and national health authorities have mobilized response efforts, including surveillance at points of entry and coordination with international health agencies
