Oba of Benin Suspends 67 Enigie Over Alleged Rebellious Activities - by Adakoriko Adaviriku Adumaza
In a significant move, the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has suspended 67 Enigie (traditional rulers) in the Benin Kingdom, effective immediately ¹. The suspension is a result of their alleged anti-palace and rebellious activities against the Oba and the traditional institution, according to Frank Irabor, Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council.
The affected Enigie have been accused of disloyalty to the Benin throne and engaging in actions detrimental to the traditional institution. The suspension marks a major effort by the Oba to uphold the integrity of the kingdom's leadership and reinforce the authority of the traditional system.
Some of the suspended Enigie, including Prof. Gregory Akenzua and Edomwonyi Ogiegbaen, have already challenged their suspension in a Benin High Court. They argue that the Oba does not have the authority to suspend them under the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Law .
This development highlights the complexities of traditional institutions and their relationships with modern governance structures. The Benin Traditional Council is expected to provide further guidance on the implications of the suspension and possible steps for redress or reinstatement of the affected traditional rulers.
