The grand finale of the Foursquare Gospel Church, Wuse District Convocation ended on Sunday with a stirring message of faith, spiritual renewal and purposeful advancement and a strong call on Christians to deepen their knowledge of the Scriptures, reject limiting patterns through discipline and obedience to God, delivered by Dr. Joshua Afolabi, Senior Pastor of Edemic Ministry International.

Speaking on the theme, “Abundance of Rain,” Dr. Afolabi encouraged believers to refuse stagnation, deepen their knowledge of God’s Word and confidently pursue the greater possibilities God has placed before them.
                     Dr. Joshua Afolabi
He explained that the Christian life is not designed for perpetual defeat or backward movement. Rather, believers are called to grow in faith, character, wisdom, usefulness and service to God.

Do Not Allow Your Past to Define Your Future:
Dr. Afolabi stressed that difficult family backgrounds, past disappointments or prolonged challenges should not become permanent limitations.

Using the story of Joseph in Genesis 37–50, he explained that Joseph experienced betrayal, slavery and imprisonment, yet those experiences did not prevent him from fulfilling God’s purpose.

Joseph eventually rose to a position of influence in Egypt and became an instrument for preserving many lives.

The lesson, he said, is clear: your beginning does not have to determine your ending.

Believers must therefore refuse to surrender their future to fear, painful experiences or negative family patterns. Through faith, obedience, wisdom and personal responsibility, a new chapter can begin.

The Word of God Must Guide the Believer:
The minister emphasised the importance of regular Bible study, describing Scripture as the believer’s primary source of truth and spiritual direction.

Quoting Hebrews 4:12, he reminded the congregation that the Word of God is “living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword.”

He urged Christians not to build their lives on fear, superstition or unverified spiritual claims, but to continually examine their experiences in the light of Scripture.

The Bible, he said, teaches believers how to respond to challenges, make wise decisions, build relationships, manage resources and remain faithful to God.

A Christian who understands the Word, he added, is better equipped to confront fear with faith and confusion with truth.

God Is Calling You to Move Forward:
Drawing from Exodus 14:15, where God told Moses, “Tell the children of Israel to go forward,” Dr. Afolabi said there are moments when prayer must be accompanied by action.

The Israelites stood before the Red Sea while Pharaoh’s army approached from behind. God’s instruction was not for them to remain where they were, but to move forward in faith.

In the same way, believers must be willing to take responsible steps towards improvement.

Moving forward may mean acquiring new knowledge, improving professional competence, starting a legitimate enterprise, repairing relationships, developing better financial discipline or becoming more committed to God’s work.

“Faith does not mean remaining permanently in one position,” he said. “There comes a time when you must move.”

Your Capacity May Be Greater Than You Realise:
He also drew attention to the feeding of the five thousand in John 6:1–14.

A young boy had only five loaves and two fish. In ordinary terms, the meal appeared insignificant. Yet when placed in the hands of Jesus, it became sufficient to feed thousands, with twelve baskets remaining.

According to the preacher, many people underestimate what God has placed within them.

Talents, ideas, education, professional skills and opportunities that may appear small can become powerful instruments when properly developed and committed to God.

The lesson is that believers should not merely focus on what they lack. They should identify what they already possess and develop it.

Small capacity, properly used, can produce great impact.

Your Breakthrough Should Bless Others:
Dr. Afolabi further explained that advancement should not be pursued only for personal comfort.

Again referring to Joseph, he noted that Joseph’s elevation eventually became a blessing to his family and an entire nation.

Similarly, God’s blessings should enable believers to support others through employment, mentorship, education, generosity and service.

He referenced Genesis 12:2, where God told Abraham, “I will bless you… and you shall be a blessing.”

The true measure of success, therefore, is not simply what a person accumulates, but how many lives become better because of that person’s influence.

Do Not Confuse Contentment With Complacency:
The preacher encouraged Christians to remain grateful for what God has already done while continuing to pursue growth.

Biblical contentment does not mean refusing to improve. It means avoiding greed, unhealthy comparison and dissatisfaction while remaining open to greater responsibility.

He cautioned worshippers against comparing their journeys with others.

“You may see another person’s testimony without knowing the battles behind it,” he said.

Drawing from Galatians 6:4, he urged believers to concentrate on faithfully developing their own assignments rather than measuring their progress against others.

Abundance Must Have a Purpose:
Dr. Afolabi explained that prosperity should be understood from the perspective of stewardship.

God’s resources, he said, should support families, help the needy, advance the Gospel and contribute positively to society.

He cited 2 Corinthians 9:8, which teaches that God provides sufficiently so believers can “abound in every good work.”

Financial increase without generosity or responsibility, he argued, falls short of the biblical purpose of blessing.

Christians must therefore work diligently, manage resources wisely and remain willing to help others.

The Sound of Abundance:
Returning to the convocation theme, Dr. Afolabi recalled the declaration of Prophet Elijah in 1 Kings 18:41: “There is the sound of abundance of rain.”

At the time Elijah spoke, there was no visible rain. Eventually, a small cloud appeared and developed into a great downpour.

The illustration, he said, demonstrates that major transformations may begin with small signs of hope.

A renewed commitment to Bible study, a decision to improve oneself, a new opportunity, a reconciled relationship or a courageous step of faith can become the beginning of something greater.

He therefore urged the congregation not merely to desire abundance, but to prepare themselves for it.

As the convocation ended, the central message remained simple and memorable:

Study the Word. Strengthen your faith. Develop your capacity. Bless others. Refuse stagnation. And keep moving forward with God.

For the believer, the “abundance of rain” is not only about material prosperity. It represents spiritual growth, renewed hope, greater usefulness and the fulfilment of God’s purpose through a life surrendered to Him.
